Come Boccaccio stesso scrisse nel Proemio del "Decameron", tutte le novelle, le favole, le parabole e le storie raccontate in quest'opera sono pensate per scacciare la "malinconia" e la "grave noia", in particolare delle donne infelicemente innamorate. Ed è per soddisfare quelle "lettrici" che non possono ascoltare le novelle della brigata, quelle donne amorosamente sole che già sognano leggendo storie di dame e cavalieri, che viene redatto questo libro di diletto per le donne, che, "oziose", avranno così di che passare il tempo. "Piacevoli ragionamenti", o addirittura "sollazzevoli", divengono l'espressione viva di quella "cortesia borghese", di quella brigata, che sta a cuore al geniale autore del Decameron. Giardino - il Decameron - è dunque il luogo della scoperta, finalmente, di una letteratura del piacere, del diletto, da contrapporsi alla letteratura della penitenza medievale e all'immagine della terribile pestilenza che travolse la vita del Boccaccio stesso e di tutti i suoi concittadini.
