This is a book about the population of London during the early modern period and a detailed book about the population of a European metropolitan city at that time. Much is now known about the historical demography of rural England, but very little is understood about the larger towns and cities. Roger Finlay applies new techniques in historical demography, principally family reconstitution and aggregative analysis of parish registers, to study the growth of population in London. He shows that parish registers are as reliable for the analysis of population trends in London as in rural England. The death rate was much higher in London than in the countryside, and this difference was not offset by a markedly higher birth rate, so the population would have declined but for migration. There were striking variations in both fertility and mortality between contrasting social areas of London.

Probabilmente destinato alle scuole nell’intento di fornire strumenti adeguati per la comprensione dei testi scritturistici, dei Padri della Chiesa e dei classici, questo lessico costituisce un esempio di organizzazione dell’immenso materiale lessicografico tràdito nel corso dei secoli, e ormai a contatto con gli idiomi che allora prendevano vita. Il risultato è la comparsa di vocaboli rari che spesso risultano incomprensibili, di sorprendenti annotazioni grammaticali e sintattiche e di citazioni di autori classici o provenienti dal testo biblico. Spesso i lemmi e le spiegazioni richiedono di essere illustrati e chiariti con dati desunti da testi paralleli della letteratura lessicografica. Quanto al contenuto figurano, soprattutto negli elenchi delle glosse, vocaboli che assumono un particolare interesse perché espressivi della lingua e della cultura del tempo. Un ricco apparato di fonti, allegate per far luce su particolari vicende linguistiche e lessicografiche, correda l’edizione del testo. Vari indici rimandano ai lemmi accolti e spiegati nel lessico e agli autori citati.
