Il filo conduttore del volume è dato dall’attenzione ai classici e alla Bibbia. Le fonti antiche forniscono a Dante i materiali per la costruzione di molti suoi personaggi, ma è la Scrittura a offrire i tratti decisivi di ciascuno: gli esempi più significativi sono Ulisse, interpretato in rapporto antinomico con il profeta Elia, Rifeo, per il quale attraverso Agostino si risale a Giobbe, Virgilio, maestro venerato ma nella prospettiva cristiana alla fine respinto. / The central theme of the volume is the attention to the classics and the Bible. Ancient sources provide Dante with the materials needed to create many of his characters, but the Scripture provides the dominant features of each of them: the most significant examples are Ulysses, in antinomy with the prophet Elias, Ripheus, whose connection with Job comes via Augustine, and Virgil, venerated master but in the end rejected from the Christian standpoint.
