Abstract: Frank Sinatra's career began in the 1940s when he arguably became America's first real pop phenomenon. He matured into one of the greatest performers and singers of his generation. Now approaching 80-years-old, his personal interpretation of popular classics still attracts vast audiences worldwide. This book looks back at Sinatra's career, at the top of two professions, spanning over half a century. His film career embraces both serious drama - "From Here to Eternity", "The Manchurian Candidate", "The Man with the Golden Arm" - and classic musical comedies such as "Guys and Dolls", but his music has always been his priority. Sinatra rose from his Italian immigrant beginnings. He was washed up in the early 1950s, and the loser in a turbulent love affair with actress Ava Gardner and in his long-running feud with the press. He is a contradictory character: an angel-faced bobby soxer idol with mob connections; one of the first celebrities to be denounced as a communist during the McCarthy era but one of Reagan's most loyal supporters some 20 years later; an actor with little respect for film but the winner of two Academy Awards; and a singer celebrated for his sensitivity, with the reputation of a common thug.

#250430 Archeologia
Ediz. inglese, francese e tedesca. Koln, Taschen 2004, cm.29,5x45,5, pp.550, hardcover. Dustcover. Coll.Extra large. his spectacular compilation of elevations, representing a superb collection of Etruscan, Greek, and Roman vases, is the fruit of a collaboration between Lord William Hamilton (1730-1803), British diplomat and collector, and Hugues d'Hancarville (1719-1805), an amateur art dealer. While working as an envoy to the British Embassy in Naples, Hamilton developed a keen interest in antiquity, visiting the excavations of Pompeii and Hercolano and publishing the first scientific essays on volcanology. His friend d'Hancarville Introduced him to the Porcinari family, whose collection of vases Hamilton purchased in its entirety, and helped Hamilton seek out additional Items to augment his collection. In 1772, Hamilton sold his collection to the British Museum; before the invaluable pieces were shipped off to England (and half lost in a shipwreck), d'Hancarville commissioned elevations depicting the vases in great detail. These drawings were published in four volumes known as Les Antiquities d'Hancarville. Contemporary sets of these rare volumes fetch prices of up to 80,000 euros at auctions; we have borrowed a fine copy from the Weimar Library to reproduce in exacting detail so that modern readers can experience the same drawings that sparked Britain's Interest in classicism and inspired reproductions from pottery manufacturers such as Wedgeworth.
