L'opera, composta da un anonimo padovano nella prima metà del Trecento è l'indiscusso capolavoro della tradizione letteraria franco-italiana: rinnovando con intelligenza e ironia i caratteri della chanson de geste e della leggenda rolandiana, l'anonimo inaugura la stagione culminante con i poemi cavallereschi del Boiardo e dell'Ariosto. Il valore letterario intrinseco e l'importanza storica rendono quindi opportuna la ristampa dell'unica ed eccellente edizione dell'opera procurata nel lontano 1913 dall'insigne filologo francese Antoine Thomas.
